Weekly Update

September 26th-30th

Hello Families!
Listed below are the important reminders and objectives for our week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Important Reminders:

  • Picture Day is this Wednesday, September 28th! Our picture time is at 11:30 (before lunch and recess-woohoo!)

Weekly Objectives:

Writing:  This week we are publishing our narrative pieces. On Monday of next week, we will celebrate with all of the third grade classes by going around to each room and reading our friends' narrative pieces.

Reading: During reader's workshop we will begin a new reading unit: Character Studies.
We will focus on getting to know the characters in our books and understanding character traits.  As a class, we will use the book Because of Winn Dixie as a mentor text to work together to study characters.

Social Studies:  This week we will be starting Chapter 2: Land Forms and Continents.  We will discuss the 7 continents and 5 oceans!  We will also learn the states that border Missouri.  Our test will be next week Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how well the kiddos do with learning all of this info.  Check planners on Friday for the exact date of testing.

Math:  This week we will begin Chapter 3: Subtraction.  We will focus on estimating differences, and subtraction with regrouping using three and four digit numbers.  The test for this chapter will either be next Thursday or Friday.  Again, check the planners on Friday for the exact date of testing.

Have a great week!

Writing:  This week we will peer edit our narrative piece and work on punctuating dialogue correctly.  We will then begin publishing our pieces!  The students have worked so hard on making their piece the best it can be, I am so proud of them!

Reading: During reader's workshop we will continue building our reading lives by working on ways to "talk back" to the text.  We will finish our first reading unit on Thursday and we will celebrate by watching the movie "Stone Fox".  This is the mentor text that we have been studying throughout the unit.

Social Studies:  We will finish up first social studies unit: neighborhoods and communities.  Last week we discussed the multiple types of neighborhoods, and this week we will discuss how to read a map.  Our test for this chapter will be Thursday the 22nd.  Study guides will be sent home today.

Math:  This week we will continue Chapter 2: Place Value.  We will focus on adding four digit numbers and continue to work on problem-solving skills with word problems.  The test for this chapter will be on Monday the 26th.  Study guides will be sent home on Thursday.

Finding the 💗 of Our Stories - Writer's Workshop

The 💗 of the story is the most important part of the story - the message!  We worked with our writing partners to find the 💗's of our stories, and to make sure those places have lots of details and describing words!  We used our graphic organizers to help us elaborate!
