Weekly Update

March 27th-31st

Hello Families!
Listed below are the important reminders and objectives for our week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Important Reminders:
  • The deadline to order the 2016-17 Concord ALL COLOR Yearbook is March 31.  To order now, CLICK HERE or return the yearbook order envelope you received with a check for $15 made out to Concord PTG.
  • This Tuesday night is the Concord Expo!  Stop by our hallway to check out projects our class will have on display!
  • MAP Testing Dates:  Our class will be MAP testing on the following dates and times, please try to avoid scheduling appointments during these times.
    • April 17th-19th (in the afternoon)
    • April 27th-28th (in the morning)

Weekly Objectives:

Writing:  For the next few weeks, we will be spending time reviewing for the upcoming MAP test!  This week we will focus on reviewing our narrative writing unit.  We will focus on the aspects of a narrative and the elements that are involved in writing a small moment story.  We will also practice typing our narratives in order to prepare for typing during testing.

Reading: During reader's workshop we will also be working on reviewing key concepts that we have learned this year!  This week we will focus on the importance of understanding the main idea.  We will also discuss the plot of a story.

Math: This week we will begin Chapter 11: Measurement.  We will start this chapter by measuring capacity (liter and milliliter) and mass (gram and kilogram).

Science: This week we will begin Chapter 8: Matter.  We will focus on the three states of matter and how water changes states.

*In order to cover all of the important math chapters before the MAP test, for the next few weeks spelling will be put on hold.  We are going to take our normal spelling time to do some extra math work.  This week and next week, we will take this time to focus on the multiple types of graphs.  We will learn the possible ways to record data and how to interpret that data.  Once we have learned the multiple types of graphs, we will take all that we know and put this to use in a graphing project.  Students will choose a question and survey the class.  They will then create a poster that displays the results using each graph we have learned!

Have a great week!

Mystery Reader - Noelle's Mom

Sorry this took sooo long to post!  Noelle's mom was our Mystery Reader on March 2, and I was out for district professional development.  She read the book "Oh, the Places You'll Go" to the class.  That is a great book.  Thanks so much for coming and sharing that book with us!

Weekly Update

March 6th-10th

Hello Families!
Listed below are the important reminders and objectives for our week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Important Reminders:
  • This Friday is a half day!
  • This Tuesday is the last opportunity for students to work on their Genius Hour projects!  Please remind your child to bring in any work that they will need to help them finish up their projects.  I am so impressed with the work I have seen!  We will be presenting our work to the class the week of the 13th.
  • Last Friday a note was sent home with your child regarding conferences.  Keep an eye out for this!

Weekly Objectives:

Writing:  We will continue working on our fourth writing unit: Persuasive Speeches, Petitions, and Editorials. This week we will continue work in our cause groups. Students have chosen a cause they are passionate about, the type of persuasive writing they would like to use (petition, editorial, or speech) and the audience they are directing their writing towards.  We will research our cause in order to become more informed and begin using the information we find in our petition, editorial, or speech.

Reading: This week we will continue our newest reading unit: Mysteries!  We will learn about utilizing our reading partners when we run into trouble in our mystery books and when we come across the solution, we will make sure to go back into the book and look for hidden clues that we may have missed along the way!

Math: This week we will finish up Chapter 10: Fractions.  We will work on comparing fractions using less than, greater than, and equal to.  The test for this chapter is Thursday!  Study guides will be sent home Wednesday.

Science/Social Studies: Due to many events happening during our social studies and science time over the next few weeks we will not be starting another social studies or science chapter until the end of the third quarter.  Instead, we will be taking this time of the day to review the reading and math Galileo tests in order to make sure we are remembering concepts and skills that we have previously learned!

Have a great week!
